MASH's School September Spike Newsletter – July 2021

Each year, in September, there is an annual spike in asthma emergency admissions, thought to be caused by the return to school after the summer (and being out of routine with preventer medications) and the change in weather. MASH has produced a newsletter for Medway's schools to provide information and resources for managing asthma in schools and a leaflet to explain to families how important a good asthma routine is over the summer. We hope that by highlighting this issue now, in July, we can help reduce the spike in Medway this summer and reduce lost schools days and emergency admissions.

Focus on Asthma, Published with Healthwatch Medway in June 2021

MASH has spent time this year asking Medway people with asthma what they need and how we can help them further. This led to a piece of work in collaboration with Healthwatch Medway, where Medway residents told us via online questionnaire and/or an online workshop how asthma affects them and what could be done to help them. These findings resulted in a report ‘Focus on Asthma’ that was published online in June: https://www.healthwatchmedway.com/report/2021-09-13/how-does-asthma-impact-your-daily-life.

Clean Air Day 2021

This year, Clean Air Day is on Thursday 17th June, with the theme of 'Let's Protect Our Children's Health From Air Pollution.

'Every year, air pollution causes up to 36,000 deaths in the UK. The World Health Organisation and the UK Government recognise that air pollution is the largest environmental health risk we face today. Poor air quality causes heart and lung diseases, is linked to low birth rate and children's lung development and may even contribute to mental health issues.'

MASH will be joining in with Clean Air Day 2021 online and via social media to help improve public understanding of air pollution and how it affects our health (particularly for people and families affected by asthma in Medway). We will help show the easy actions you can take to tackle air pollution and protect the environment, and to improve everyone's health.

Find out more about Clean Air Day 2021 here.

'We at MASH know that air pollution is an important cause of asthma and that it makes asthma worse for those who have it. It is estimated that 16% of adult deaths in Europe, including those from asthma, are caused by air pollution.'

This funding will help us improve and expand our outreach in 2020 so that more communities across Medway will access our support and advise on asthma and asthma-related issues. You can read more about the day here.
